FAQs

What is your editing process?

We edit your manuscript in Microsoft Word using the track changes and comment features. Our editors make at least two passes through each manuscript (often times several more). Our first reading involves making general observations. In subsequent readings, we make corrections, such as to grammar, consistency, punctuation, style, word usage, and more. We also may make suggestions in the form of queries. Our queries come in two forms. For short, isolated suggestions, we may query in the manuscript’s margin using the comment feature in Microsoft Word. For general or repeated issues that require clarification, our query will take the form of a cover letter that we will return to you at the completion of our edit. For a detailed description of our services, please see our Rates & Services page.

What are the differences among your line editing, copy editing, and proofreading services?

A detailed description of each service along with examples of each type of edit is available on our Rates & Services page.

How do I hire you?

To express interest in our services, e-mail your manuscript as a Microsoft Word attachment to prestigeprose@gmail.com. Include in the e-mail the following information: word count, desired service, and any deadline requirements. Within 24 hours of receipt of your e-mail, we will respond with a quote as well as a free edit of the first five pages of your manuscript. Whether you hire us or not, the first five page edit is absolutely free. If you wish to hire us, we require a one-half payment up front with the second half due upon delivery.

How do I make a payment?

We will e-mail you an invoice with a link to pay online using PayPal or a credit card, or you can request to mail a check to us. Your invoice will include the following information: the services purchased, your e-mail address, your manuscript name, invoice date, and invoice number. The invoice will show that it comes from Staci Mauney at Prestige Prose.

How do you determine your rates?

Our rates are based on the following factors: 1) industry standards, which you can find on the editorial rates page of the Editorial Freelancers Association; 2) word count, and 3) desired turnaround time.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel before we begin to edit your manuscript, we will provide a full refund. If you cancel after we start your edits, we will pro-rate the refund and return any portion for work we have not completed.

What is the time frame for an edit?

Time frames depend on a number of factors, including your deadline as well as the editor’s schedule. When we respond to your request for a quote, we will work with you to provide a deadline for completion.

What if I am unhappy with the edits?

Our editors are consummate professionals who pride themselves on their excellent service. If you are unhappy with one of our edits, we will provide another editor to make another round of edits to your manuscript for no additional charge.

Is there any subject matter that you will not edit?

No. We will edit manuscripts with sex, violence, and profanity, and regardless of political or religious leaning. The only exception is that we will not edit any manuscript that contains illegal content.
