Writing Prompts
The Haunted Office
Use the writing prompt below to incorporate literary devices into your writing. Try alliteration, figures of speech, inversion, or any of a variety of literary devices.
You recently started a new job in an old office building downtown that is reported to be haunted. One night you’re working late when you hear strange noises coming from the other side of the building. You thought you were alone, but now you’re not so sure. You decide to investigate. As you approach the dark hallway that leads to the other side of the building, you see movement out of the corner of your eye. What is it, and what do you do?
The Summer Vacation
Use this week’s writing prompt to inspire you to write the opening lines of a new scene:
School is out for the summer, so you and your family load up the car to take a trip. The kids are noisy and excited, and you’re ready for some time away. You’ve pulled onto the highway and are a few miles outside of town when you hear a loud thump thump thump. What just happened?
Memorial Day Celebration
Today’s writing prompt is in honor of Memorial Day and all those who have served and died while on active duty in the United States military.
You and your spouse just bought a new home in the country. The two of you are exploring the attic when you find a dusty old trunk in the corner. When you open it, you find a folded U.S. flag, a Purple Heart tucked in a black box, a worn military dress jacket, and an old black-and-white photo of a man wearing that same military jacket. You want to return the items, so you begin to search for their rightful owner. What do you find?
